Head of Turkey's main opposition CHP visits HDP headquarters for the first time

As part of his visits carried out after the referendum with the purpose of ‘extending thanks and appreciation’, chair of Turkey’s main opposition party CHP (Republican People’s Party), Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, visited the HQ of HDP (People’s Democratic Party).

HDP’s recently elected co-chair Serpil Kemalbay, MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder, spokesperson Osman Baydemir, and executive board member Fatma Kurtulan hosted CHP’s chair, along with CHP’s deputy chairs Bülent Tezcan and Haluk Koç, as well as, chief advisor Cemil Erhan.

The last meeting between the heads of the two parties was held back in 2015 in the aftermath of the June 7 national elections, where HDP had passed the voting threshold. Today’s (June 9) meeting also marks the first visit of CHP at HDP’s HQs.

During the talks, HDP representatives expressed their regret over CHP’s decision to approve the proposal of AKP to lift MPs immunity from prosecution.

That particular move made last year has consequently led to detention of HDP’s co-chairs and a number of lawmakers, the representatives noted, adding that they also found the reaction of CHP to detention of HDP officials as ‘insufficient.’
