HDP MP leaves handcuffs on PM’s desk at Parliament to protest detention of Diyarbakır municipality heads

HDP Adana MP Meral Danış Beştaş protested the detention of Diyarbakır municipality heads Gültan Kışanak and Fırat Anlı by leaving handcuffs at the desk of the Prime Minister in the Parliament.

Speaking at the parliament’s general assembly yesterday (October 26), HDP MP Beştaş emphasized that ‘Diyarbakır is the precious gem of the Kurdish people’ and said: “In the face of the nonstop coup process, a process of nonstop resistance has now been launched as of today. And, we are going to continue expressing our reactions democratically in all grounds. You no longer have anything you can say politically. You are trying to rule this country through oppression, torture, and cruelty. You are unable to confront us politically, so, you arrest our municipality heads and provincial leaders.”

Firstly placing the handcuffs that she had brought along with her on the desk of the Prime Minister, HDP MP Beştaş then left the handcuffs on the platform before taking her seat.

Meanwhile, having been bothered by the protest of Beştaş, AKP parliamentary group leader Mehmet Muş said to her: “You have no right to have a show here with handcuffs. There is an attempt to create something irrelevant from the current situation and this means an attempt to influence the judicial processes. Either do politics or keep a distance with this organization (PKK).”

Shortly after taking HDP Diyarbakır Cosmopolitan Municipality Co-Presidents Gültan Kışanak and Fırat Anlı into custody on October 25, officials announced that both leaders, who are held in custody in scope of counterterrorism operations, were to be not allowed to see their lawyers for the next 5 days. Immediately afterwards, their lawyers also stated that they were going to object to this decision.

Meanwhile, in three major cities – İstanbul, İzmir, Bursa – demonstrations were held in support of Kışanak and Anlı yesterday (October 26). Gathering in city squares, people and representatives of political parties and civil society institutions demanded Kışanak and Anlı to be releaesed.
