In the face of government’s latest crackdown on more media sources – TVs and radios – enforced based on ‘state of emergency decrees’, journalists and authors have started a major petition with the invitation of HAZİRAN movement.
Titled as ‘We are protecting the right of people to obtain information’, the petition has already received numerous signatures from authors, reporters, and journalists, including the prominent public figures Zülfü Livaneli, L.Doğan Tılıç, Bülent Mumay, and Ahmet Ümit.
In the call for the petition, the main message that has been sent across is ‘voices and colors cannot be silenced’.
Parts of the message are as the following: “If the bloody coup attempt of July 15 had been successful, all voices and newspapers would have been shut down. The coup attempt was suppressed but another period of a coup has currently been experienced by AKP’s ‘state of emergency.’
They (AKP government) continue trying to silence voices and colors by oppressing the newspapers, TV channels, and radios. These decisions for a crackdown on media, police raids, and arrests are all made with the excuse of OHAL (state of emergency) for the purpose of silencing any voice that is against AKP.
We are going to stand shoulder to shoulder against this bullying over İMC TV, Hayatın Sesi TV, Yön Radio, and Özgür Radio and against intentions of the government to take apart all part of life.
We call on all people who are against pressure on free media to be the voice of free media and the voice of İMC, Hayatın Sesi, Yön, Özgür, and all other oppressed.
We are not going to be silenced! We are not going to remain silent about the silencing of the voices for freedoms, democracy, secularism, and peace!”
