A lawsuit filed against a police officer on killing of Berkin Elvan in Gezi protests of Turkey

A lawsuit has been filed against police officer F.D. in connection to killing of Berkin Elvan with a request for lifetime imprisonment.

The indictment of investigations on killing of Berkin Elvan by a police officer during Gezi protest was completed 1270 days after its start date. Officer F.D. is being charged with ‘possibility of deliberate killing’. 42 other people had previously been charged with the same accusations; however, cases against them have been dismissed due to ‘lack of grounds for legal action.’

In his testimony, police officer F.D. had stated that he did not remember whether he had used ZET weapon or not.

Berkin Elvan was shot from his head by a teargas canister fired by a police on 16 June 2013 in İstanbul’s Okmeydanı town during the Gezi protests. Elvan remained in coma for 269 days and lost his life on 11 March 2014.

Immediately after his passing away, then Prime Minister of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had commented on his passing by saying ‘He is dead and that’s it! It’s passed. We cannot hold ceremonies for everyone who dies…’ Erdoğan had also led the crowd of his supporters to catcall at Elvan’s mother.
