Amnesty International calls for urgent action against ‘forced evacuations’ in Turkey’s Sur

Amnesty International’s Turkey branch has launched an urgent action campaign against the forced eviction of hundreds of people in Sur district of Turkey’s southeastern province of Diyarbakır.

A district where great damage was left as a result of operations of Turkey’s armed forces in the region against the armed PKK insurgents, Sur had already been evacuated to a great extend by summer of last year. While tens of thousands were displaced from their homes, only some of them were able to return.

As the government has started up a so-called ‘urbanization project’ to build over the areas it left in rubbles, people who have remained in their houses are also being forced to leave their houses now.

To draw attention to the problem and to have people pressure the government to stop these forced evacuations, Amnesty International has launched an urgent action campaign.
