Complete backpedaling on Russia and Israel

İBRAHİM VARLI

What do the apology from Russia and agreement with Israel mean? How should the double ‘U turns’ which the government is trying to display as ‘normalization’ be read? Firstly, what the AKP is proposing as ‘normalization’ is actually the ‘official’ declaration of the flunking of the political Islam project, meaning the new Ottoman dreams. The agreement settled in Rome, which is criticized even by the followers of the administration, even though timidly, signals the end of the day-dream. The ‘ostensible’ crisis with Israel, which had started out with Davos and continued with the Mavi Marmara raid, was a set-up project that was for portraying AKP in the region as the role model. And, the end of that project has come. The cover-up of ‘soft Islam’ which was tried to be put on Turkey by the hands of AKP had ‘officially’ been started out with the call-off on Israel at the Davos town of Switzerland. The aim was to make Erdoğan and AKP’s Turkey the ‘leader of the Islamic’ world. The 2009 Davos crisis and the 2010 Mavi Marmara provocation were steps taken on this path purposefully. Through these ‘set-up crisis’, the people of the region were to like the ‘local Muslim brothers’ and keep on going on their way.

In the aftermath of the Davos show, posters of Erdoğan were being slipped into people’s hands at meetings and demonstrations organized in ‘mounted troops’ in Palestine, Jordan, Lebonan, Egypt and even Morocco. A show of endless love was being extended and the ‘chief’ was being dignified as the ‘savior of the Middle East.’ Although it was later on revealed that these meetings were set-up with the money sent out through discretionary funds via Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency and the embassies, the scenario had already been actualized.

The year 2010 is the turning point for the new zealot and secterian regime that were put into life by AKP. While building its own regime, AKP needed not only domestic enemies but also foreign enemies looking like the ones at home. Israel was the most ‘useful enemy’ for the building of this new regime. And, with Sisi’s Egypt, it met its purpose ‘throughly.’ And, when the construction of the secterian fascism had been completed, there was no longer a need for Israel. The agreement signed with the coordination of US Secretary of State John Kerry in the capitol of Italy, Rome, is the solid proof of the end of the usefulness of this enmity. This is, of course, not the only reason for the double asterns taken in one day. The main reason of the reverse is the defeat in foreign policy. The Palace (Presidential Residence) and the AKP government have come down to a point where it would compensate on anything due to the major defeats it had in foreign policy, which it had for a while led with Ottoman dreams. They now have no place to step up, no air to breath in.

The agreement that has been reached with Israel by giving up on almost all conditions and demands and the extention of apology to Russia within the next 24 hours is an indicator of such trapped situation. The details of agreement reached in Rome shows tat this time it was Tel Aviv saying ‘one minute.’ While the sanctions and the blockadge continue in Gaza, the demands of apology and compensation do not seem to have been fulfilled. Furthermore, AKP has now given guarantee on blocking of Hamas from taking ‘terorist’ or military actions towards Israel from the Turkey’s territories.

So, how will the agreement and the apology reflect on the region? Each ‘gear’ will have different impacts in the short, medium and long terms. The most important reflection in the short term would be for AKP government to ease its international ‘loneliness’ a little, partially. Beyond being symbolic, the importance of the current situation for AKP is quite great when the real politics of the region is taken into account. In the medium term, there would be a return to the factory default settings. And, this in turn would have a direct impact on Syria’s politics and AKP will have to repress its aggresive approaches. It is obvious that although it is being tried to put aside a little but Hamas will end up paying up thehighest price for the reversing between the new Ottomans and Israel. That is for sure. AKP gave a guarantee to Israel about Hamas, which was Israel’s condition for coming down to the table. AKP gave a word on Turkish land not to be used by Hamas for carrying out ‘terorist’ or military activities against Israel. A great majority of the members of Hamas in İstanbul rushed out of İstanbul weeks before the agreement and found their way in the Qatar’s capitol Doha.

Removal of Davutoğlu, who was the theoritician and the operator of the died out foreign policy, had actually given the signals way before that AKP were to backpedal. Bringing of the ‘low profile’ Binal Yıldırım as the Prime Minister was also the sign that now it was ‘no longer the time to gain enemies but to gain friends.’ While Ahmet Davutoğlu also got his share out of this, ‘normalization’ initiatives followed one after another.

Now, next are the backpedalings on Egypt and Syria. Let’s see how the ‘Rabia reversion’ will be marketted?
