While Turkey’s Ministry of Education has been actively organizing events and presenting rewards encouraging religious activities, it has taken a step that will stand as an obstacle for artistic activities.

As reactions against the decision of the Ministry of Education to increase lesson hours for the mandatory Religion Culture and Values Education and to decrease art and philosophy lessons to one hour per week continue growing, the Ministry repealed the Regulations on Fine Arts Education.

The regulation was enacted in 2008 with the purpose of ‘ensuring providence of primary and secondary school students whose special talents are determined with the necessary education.’

Providing no explanation for the decision of the repeal of this law, the Ministry has also given up on its goal to provide students with free extracurricular activities in fields of arts. This will leave students and families with no choice but private institutions of arts.
