Demirtaş: ‘About 80-90 parliamentarians knew about the coup attempt in advance’

HDP Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş spoke at this party’s group meeting today (October 18).

Talking about the current situation in Middle East and Turkey’s position, Demirtaş said: “Turkey has chosen Al-Nusra and ISIL as its ally in the Middle East. A government being in alliance with such groups cannot be legit!”

Also touching on the latest developments with regards to the operations in the region, Demirtaş said the rhetoric of Erdoğan with regards to Turkey’s role and position in Mosul did not reflect the truth. Asserting that Erdoğan talks that way in order to avoid admitting ‘defeat’, Demirtaş added: “In Gaziantep, even State could not enter some of the towns. Now, those members of ISIL who did massacres are being wiped out one by one so that they would not reveal the truth. And, this is the biggest proof that there had been collaboration with ISIL…”

Also adding that the government prefers trying to declare HDP as terrorist, instead of seeing it as a good chance to advance, Demirtaş said: “If the government had a sound mind, it would reach out to Europe and Middle East through HDP.”

Demirtaş made comments on the July 15 coup attempt, as well, saying: “80-90 parliamentarians were aware of the coup attempt. And, most of them are AKP MPs. They (AKP) do not reveal this for now thinking it would cause a political crisis. They should disclose those names… But their goal is early elections; they will hold early elections and not include those names as candidates. So, they are now silent about it.”
