Die Welt’s arrested journalist targeted by Turkey’s pro-government daily

Turkey’s Star newspaper, which is known for its support and affinity with the ruling party AKP, has targeted Die Welt’s detained journalist Deniz Yücel in an article titled as ‘Not a journalist; a hitman of PKK.’

In the recent news piece of Star, it was stated that Yücel’s reportings between the dates of 1 June 2016 and 28 February 2017 were examined by Turkey’s Directorate General of Press and Information and some were deemed as ‘PKK propaganda.’

According to Star’s reporting, some of Yücel’s choice of wording used in his reporting, such as the words and phrases ‘despot, oppressive, against women, leader that oppresses the opposition’, are considered as ‘insults.’

Assertions of Yücel where he had mentioned that ‘Turkey has been made pious by the government’ and that ‘Turkey ended up having to play a role of a figurant actor in operations against DAESH in Syria and Iraq’ are ‘lies.’

In Star’s reporting, a photo from Yücel’s interview with one of PKK’s heads, Cemil Bıyık, has also been shared in order to strengthen the argument.

After having been arrested over accusations on ‘terror propaganda,’ Yücel had said, “Even though they have stolen my freedom, the interrogations and the reason for the case still makes me laugh.”
