'Don't go out if you're shorter than 160 cm', says weather forecaster in Turkey after major flood

A strong flood caused by a heavy rainfall in İstanbul on Tuesday (July 18) left many people stranded, both outside and in their houses.

While the governor’s office urged citizens to ‘avoid driving in their private cars’ if possible, many among the public reacted to the lack of efficient infrastructure across the city after seeing subway rails, metrobus routes, and the tunnels get hit severely under one of the heaviest rainfalls in the city in decades.

A reccomendation by weather forecaster Hüseyin Öztel from HaberTürk TV, on the other hand, caused many humorous posts to be shared on social media as the members of the public ridiculed the approach of experts to disasters.

When talking about the severity of the flood on live broadcast, expert Öztel suggested for people ‘shorter than 160 cm’ to avoid going outside.

A social media user wrote in response to Öztel’s statement by saying, ‘We are number one in the world when it comes to disaster management’.
