Female police officers now allowed to wear hijabs

The scope of the ‘democratization’ package law that President Erdoğan had announced in 2013, while he was the prime minister, has recently been extended. With the new regulation, the legal obstacle for female police officers to wear a hijab has now been lifted, as it has been announced in the Official Gazette (Resmi Gazete)

From now on, female police officers will be able to put on a head scarf under their hats or caps, as long as the scarf is plain and the same color as their uniforms.

The text of the added item in the dress code of the police force members reads as: “Causal sweaters, vests, or clothing of the like, except for the women’s head scarves that are to be plain and same color as the uniform and worn in a way not to cover their faces, cannot be worn under the uniform visibly.

Hijab for female police officers as an issue in other parts of the world

There are various kinds of regulations in this regard around the world. While female police officers are allowed to wear hijabs in certain countries such as the USA, England, and Canada, there are no covered women police officers in France and Germany. In Norway, a commission appointed by the government had proposed for a legal adjustment in this regard, however, the proposal had been rejected by the cabinet.
