Human rights advocates in Turkey taken into custody while at a meeting in İstanbul

A group of representatives and executives of human rights associations in Turkey was taken into custody in Büyükada (largest of the Princes' Islands) of İstanbul while they were holding a meeting at a hotel.

According to reports of Kemal Göktaş from Cumhuriyet newspaper, the investigation and the operation against the human rights advocates were launched in such ‘secrecy’ that neither the lawyers nor the family members of those in custody know the any details.

The police team that came to the hotel where the advocates were holding a seminar took into custody all 9 human rights professionals claiming there was a ‘denunciation’ against them.

The advocates still held at the police department of Princes’ Islands are Nalan Erkem and Özlem Dalkıran from Citizens Association; İlknur Üstün from Women’s Coalition; İdil Eser and Veli Acı from Amnesty International Turkey branch; Günal Kurşun from Human Rights Agenda Association; Nejat Taştan from Equal Rights Monitoring Associations; activist Şeyhmus Özbekli and moderator Ali Garawi.
