ISIL militants who have given away Jarabulus without battling, although they had been controlling it for the past two years, are nowhere to be found! It is almost like they have ‘evaporated.’

Jarabulus is seized but there are no ISIL militants around!

Although the town of Jarabulus, which is across the border from Turkey’s Karkamış district, has been seized from ISIL under the operation Euphrates Shield of Turkish Armed Forces led with the support of FSA, where the ISIL’s jihadist militants have run away to remains a ‘secret.’ It’s as if the ISIL militants, who had been controlling Jarabulus for over two years by now, have ‘evaporated.’

While it is striking that ISIL has demonstrated no ‘resistance’ against the operation over this town – with a population of about 20,000 – and has not battled at all, no footage or images of any clashes have been reported to the public. It is quite thought-provoking that ISIL members would come out from this scot-free, as there were no real clashes.

Where have they gone?

One of the questions that come to mind with regards to these developments is ‘Where have the ISIL militants gone?’ While it is reported and understood that the ISIL members have evacuated the town which had been under their control, it is still not known where they have gone!

They may have settled in Turkey again

There are a few possibilities in this regard. One of them is that ISIL militants may have run away to Turkey. As their previous crossings over the Turkey-Syria borders had been asserted both by national and international sources very often, this again comes up as an option they may have chosen. While speculations over the high probability of these militants crossing the border again and reaching places such as Karkamış and Kilis in Antep, where their organization had previously been settled. If that is the case, their potential to carry out other attacks within Turkey remains high.

Have they run away to Al Bab in Syria?

A second possibility in terms of where ISIL militants may have gone lies with their preference over Al Bab town of Syria that is located to the southwest of Jarabulus and already under the control of ISIL.

On the other hand, their harboring in the west of Jarabulus is out of the question since towns in this region – such as Kobane and Tel Abyad – is under the control of YPG.
