Lawyers of Turkey’s hunger-striking teachers taken into custody

To protest the continued detention of Turkey’s dismissed and hunger-striking educators Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça, the two teachers’ lawyers Engin Gökoğlu, Aytül Kaplan, and İpek Moral held a demonstration in front of the Justice Ministry in Ankara on the day of the opening of the new judicial term.

As a practice that has become a ‘norm’, the police in Ankara prevented the three lawyers from holding their peaceful demonstration and took them into custody.

They were released after giving testimony to the officers.

Gülmen and Özakça are two people among tens of thousands who lost their positions at public institutions in scope of the investigations and purge of the government in response to the failed coup of last summer. The two were arrested back in May, while they had left behind 75 days with their hunger-strike, which they started to demand their jobs back.
