Mandatory religion education lessons at high schools in Turkey increased

Quality of Turkey’s education system has for long been an issue of debate in the country. On top of already existing deficiencies, the ruling party AKP’s insistence on expanding ‘religion education’ while shrinking certain other fields has taken the problem to another level.

According to reports of Elif Gugu from BirGün, while the number of lesson hours for the mandatory religion education courses in high schools will be increased from 1 to 2 per week, biology lessons will be dropped to 2 from 3 per week, in both vocational and regular institutions.

Along with religion education, music and visual arts courses will also be 2 lesson hours per week.

Foreign language courses at Anatolian High Schools will be dropped to 4 from 6 lesson hours per week, the report said.

Furthermore, courses on ‘History of Revolution of Republic of Turkey and Kemalism’ will no longer be given for 11th graders and 12th graders will take it as 2 hours per week.
