Merkel’s statement on cancellation of meeting of Turkey’s minister in Germany

Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel gave statements about cancellation of a public meeting of Turkey’s justice minister Bekir Bozdağ in Germany’s Gaggnenau. Merkel said ‘decisions about events and organizations in cities are made by local offices.’

Tension between the two countries had grown earlier over reports about Turkish imams (Islamic clerics) in Germany having spied for Turkey’s government. Recent arrest of Die Welt’s Turkey correspondent Deniz Yücel over accusations of terror propaganda has intensified this tension.

Decision of the city head Michael Pfeiffer to cancel the public meeting of Turkish minister Bozdağ in Germany’s Gaggenau was based on ‘the arranged site not being large enough for the anticipated crowd’, according to official statements.
