Merkel says arrest of Die Welt's Turkey correspondent is ‘harsh and nonproportional’

Germany’s chancellor Angela Merkel reacted against arrest of Turkey correspondent of Die Welt newspaper in İstanbul, Turkey on accusations of terror propaganda.

Stating that the news about the decision for his arrest has caused ‘disappointment and sadness’, Merkel also underlined that Yücel had reported to police department himself on February 14th in response to a warrant of Turkey’s officials.

Germany’s government expects Turkey to take account of principles of freedom of press when trying Yücel, said chancellor Merkel, adding the decision was ‘harsh and nonproportional.’

Merkel also said German officials will continue efforts to ensure his fair trial and eventual release.
