Office of Turkey's online portal of unions raided by police; its editor in custody

Office of the online news portal of trade unions in Turkey was raided early this morning by the police. While certain office materials were searched and seized, the portal’s (Sendika.org) editor Ali Ergin Demirhan was also taken into custody over accusations of ‘trying to portray the referendum results as illegitimate, organizing demonstrations in that regard through social media accounts, and triggering hatred among members of the public.’

Journalist Demirhan, whose computer’s hard disc and personal mobile phone were also seized by the police, was taken to police station in Esenler district of İstanbul.

The website Sendika.org had been shut down several times before as a result of the efforts of Turkey’s government to run a major crackdown in the country following the failed coup attempt of 2016.
