While reports on violence against women, especially in open to public areas, has increased significantly within the past few years, a disturbing sticker encouraging aggression was placed inside a public bus in Turkey’s capital city Ankara.
Placed over the door of the bus, the sticker had two parts. In the first, a man figure and a woman stand next to each other and the writing below says ‘what are you looking at’ with a slang tone. In the second part, the man figure kicks the woman and says ‘yield way.’
According to reports of CNN Türk, passengers reported about it and the stickers were removed as a reporter found the bus driver and had a recording inside the bus. The driver claims in the video that he had not seen it before although he has been driving that bus for a while, however, the driver’s aide says he had indeed seen it but did not think of it as an offense or as encouraging violence.
Several incidents where a woman gets harassed or attacked in public transportation have been witnessed in Turkey lately.
And, the attacks were done by both male passengers and the vehicle’s drivers.
Perpetrators of such crimes are mostly released quickly even if they do get caught and interrogated.
