Police block roads and clash with people during Ankara massacre commemoration

Police has blocked the roads surrounding the Ankara Train Station area where people are trying to assemble to commemorate the victims of Ankara massacre of last year.

While workers’ unions, civil society groups, political representatives, and the families and friends of the victims had previously announced their program to be present in front of the train station today (October 10), Ankara Governor’s Office and the Police Department released information over the weekend announcing ‘a ban on assembling’ in the city, especially the area around the train station, ‘due to state of emergency’.

At the moment, hundreds of people are trying to walk to the site, while police insists on allowing only a small group of people who are relatives of the victims.

Marked as the bloodiest suicide bomb attack in Turkey throughout the history of the Republic, Ankara massacre was carried out by ISIL during a Peace March and caused over 100 people – including children – to lose their lives.
