Police blockade around Human Rights Statue in Turkey's capital continues

Yüksel Street in Ankara, where dismissed educators Nuriye Gülmen and Semih Özakça had been holding their sit-in to demand their jobs back, has been blocked by police since the two educators who’ve been on a hunger strike for nearly 3 months were arrested last week.

Police attacked the family members of Gülmen and Özakça and their supporters who gathered on Tuesday (May 30) in front of the Human Rights Statue on Yüksel Street to give a press statement demanding the release of educators and an end to dismissals of people through emergency decrees.

Detained academic Semih Özakça’s wife Esra Özakça, who has also been on hunger strike since detention of her husband, was dragged down on the ground by police.

Dismissed academic Cenk Yiğiter was injured on the site by a plastic bullet fired by the police.

Özakça and others who gathered on Yüksel Street also demanded the release of dismissed educators Acun Karadağ and Veli Saçılık, who were also taken into custody earlier last week when they tried to protest the detention of their colleagues by wearing t-shirts with their pictures on them.
