Police in Turkey block Taksim Square and Gezi Park to prevent Trans Pride March

After the announcement of İstanbul’s governor’s office banning the Transgender Pride March scheduled for today (July 2), police has blocked all roads around and leading to famous Taksim Square and the İstiklal Street next to it.

While members of the LGBT community and activists said they will still practice their right to assemble and hold their march, police also blocked all entrances to the Gezi Park at Taksim Square.

Riot police and water canon vehicles (TOMA) are stationed at almost each corner of the area.

Last week, the LGBT Pride March was also banned by the governor of İstanbul due to 'security concerns', as well as, 'reactionary comments observed on social media against the march.'
