Proposed changes in constitution of Turkey passed in first round of parliamentary voting

The first of the two rounds of parliamentary hearings on constitutional amendment in Turkey was finalized yesterday (January 9).
While 338 parliamentarians gave approval for the proposed amendments of AKP, 162 voted against it. There was 1 invalid vote; 2 abstentions; and, 5 blanks.

According to the current constitutional terms, amendments on the constitution are done in two rounds of parliamentary voting. As the first was passed yesterday, the second round will take longer – anticipated to be around two weeks – as each proposed item will be discussed at parliament floor.

23rd of January is the planned date for finalizing the discussions and holding the vote on it. If changes pass the second round, Turkey will then have a referendum in Spring on these changes, which propose for a shift to presidential system in the country.
