Rector from Bolu: 'Rector elections were a traumatic practice causing universities in Turkey to regress'

Giving statements to journalists at a meeting of Bolu Journalists’ Association, Abant İzzet Baysal University rector Prof. Dr. Hayri Coşkun asserted that rector elections were a ‘traumatic practice causing regression at universities’, adding “it had caused too much wreckage in universities. I have been greatly pleased by the lifting of the rector elections.”

Arguing that rector elections used to result in ‘long-term enmity among faculty members’ in higher education institutions, Coşkun claimed that this had been a problem experienced and unresolved since the 1990’s.

Also expressing that ‘he had always thought of the rector elections as an on-paper procedure’ since the elections did not involve the students or the administrative staff, Coşkun said: “After all, the office I sit in belongs to the State; the electricity is provided by the State; my office desk and computer are given by the State; and, my salary is provided by the State. So, I used to always think rector elections were not a right thing.”
