State of emergency extended for the 4th time in Turkey
The state of emergency has been extended for the 4th time in Turkey since last July and it will be in force for 3 more months.
Declared in response to the failed coup attempt by a group in armed forces alleged to be members of what the Turkish government refers to as the FETÖ (Fethullahist Terrorist Organization), the state of emergency has given expanded powers to the president and the council of ministers, who have passed dozens of executive decrees dismissing a massive number of people from their positions at state institutions and shutting down hundreds of media institutions and thousands of other types of organizations, with the allegations of the targeted individuals’ and groups’ ties to the coup.
The opposition in the country has been criticizing the government for oppressive measures taken in scope of state of emergency.
In his 10 item manifesto delivered at the big Justice March rally on July 9, main opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu also demanded for the state of emergency to be lifted.
The unlawful practices observed under the emergency have also been pointed out by European countries.
