Statement from UN on child abuse bill in Turkey

Giving a statement on the scandalous bill of the AKP government of Turkey which caused major objections both among officials and the public, UNICEF’s spokesperson Christophe Boulierac told AFP representative s that as the UN children’s fund, they were ‘deeply concerned.’

Boulierac also said: “These abject forms of violence against children are crimes which should be punished as such, and in all cases the best interest of the child should prevail.”

Turkey’s current government AKP has been attempting to lower the age of consent to 12 previously, as well. With its latest proposal, the government suggested for the molesters to be freed of punishment if they were to marry the victim.

The bill, which has caused an outrage among women’s groups, as well as all other parts of the society, will be brought the Parliament floor again tomorrow (November 22).

Meanwhile, as major rallies were held across the country over the weekend to protest against the bill, the tag of #TecavüzMeşrulaştırılamaz (Rape cannot be legitimized) remained on the tops of the lists throughout the weekend as people strictly demanded for the bill to be withdrawn.
