Students in Turkey taken to mosques under project of education ministry

In breach of principles of scientific and secular education, officials from Turkey’s ministry of education continue giving support to a wide range of projects that force young students to be engaged in religious activities, in the name of ‘values education’.

In a recent activity organized in Turkey’s Erzurum province under the leadership of Provincial Directorate of Ministry of Education and Humans and Civilization Movement Association, around 300 elementary school aged children were taken by representatives from the Association to the historical Ulu Mosque in Erzurum.

Young students carried banners and posters that read as ‘I have only one wish for you: just do your Namaz’; and ‘the world is hollow; so, run to the mosque’. Their t-shirts provided by the organizers of the event had the writing on it that said: ‘Namaz (Islamic prayer) is the essence of religion’.

Models of Al-Aqsa Mosque, the Great Mosque of Mecca, and Al-Masjid an-Nabawi were also displayed for students to see as the imam in the mosque told them about the importance of each.

As part of the ‘value education’ projects managed and funded by the Ministry of National Education, elementary and secondary school students in Turkey are being engaged in a number of religious activities. Turkey’s education system and overall scholastic achievement in the country, on the other hand, have been degraded significantly within the past decade.
