Support from scholars in Turkey for workers whose rights are violated by both employers and government

After the 60 days long ban on the strike of Asil Çelik laborers, Turkey’s government released another announcement banning the strike of over 2000 steel industry workers from 13 different factories with membership in EMİS (Electromechanic Steel

Employers’ Union) in 4 provinces of Turkey for the next two months.

Reacting against the ban, workers stated they will continue their strike until Monday (January 23) and release their joint statement then.

This latest ‘postponing of the strike’ issued by Council of Ministers and the President in reference to state of emergency law marks the 10th time the AKP government has resorted to such approach against laborers.

Over 30 scholars from various fields in Turkey, along with members of Progressive Workers’ Union (DİSK) and Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP), have officially condemned the government’s oppression on the workers and stated their ‘support for the laborers of the steel industry whose rights are being violated both by their employers and the government.’
