Trustees to be appointed to 28 municipalities of the dominantly Kurdish region

While giving a speech during the graduation ceremony of the Police Academy in Gölbaşı, Ankara, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu stated that trustees will be appointed to 28 municipalities in the southeastern region, where Kurds mostly hold power.

Also mentioning that these appointments will be done within the next 15 days, Soylu said ‘governance in these areas will be taken away from the hands of Qandil and given to the nation’.

Appointments are to be enforced based on statutory decrees passed under state of emergency.

Response of HDP

Responding to the statements of Minister Soylu, HDP (People’s Democratic Party) Co-chair Figen Yüksekdağ said HDP will not ‘recognize’ the appointed trustees.

According to the reports of İMC TV, parts of the statements of Yüksekdağ are: “So, they’ve decided to appoint trustees. And, what are you going to do to millions of constituents? Are you going to appoint a trustee for each constituent? …Today, politics are run with violence; not with reason andnot in unity. It makes no sense to label all of these people as coup plotters or terrorists without differentiating between the guilty and the innocent.”

DBP’s response

DBP (Democratic Regions Party) Co-chair Sebahat Tuncel also spoke about the decision of the government to appoint trustees to the municipalities of dominantly Kurdish regions, saying: “Just as we have resisted against military coups, we are also going to resist against civil coups. This is a civil coup! There is a country at hand that is run through statutory decrees.”

Also stating that ‘those who do not want to hear the demands of Kurds and who overlook their desire to establish local governances with the people of Turkey’ are in fact trying to ambiguate the whole process. Tuncel added: “They are going to take over our municipalities; and, are we going to watch? This is unacceptable! …On the night of July 15, coup plotters bombed the parliament building… But now, AKP has abandoned the Parliament through the statutory decrees. The bill for trustees had not passed in the Parliament… Then, over one night, they (AKP) put them in front of us through statutory decrees. This is called a coup!”
