Turkey’s AKP rejects request of opposition for an investigation on ‘political ties of coup plotters’

In scope of the state of emergency law declared in response to the failed coup attempt in Turkey back in summer of 2016, hundreds of thousands of state employees – including teachers, judges, and security officers - have been dismissed; and, tens of thousands have been jailed with the order of decrees that deemed them as ‘having ties to terror.’

Opposition party HDP’s head of the parliamentary group, Ahmet Yıldırım, had submitted a parliamentary proposal for investigation of ‘political roots and ties of the July 15 coup attempt’, however, it has recently been rejected with the votes of AKP members.

In response to the decision of AKP MPs to avoid launching further investigation into the coup in order to reveal the political ties of the plotters, main opposition party CHP’s Deputy Chair Erdal Aksünger said, in a tweet: “Therefore, the political ties of the coup has been revealed”.

Mentioning in his proposal that the work of the parliamentary committee was carried out completely in line with the preferences of the AKP members, HDP MP Yıldırım had also made a reminder on assertions about 80 AKP MPs having the ByLock application, over which thousands of people have faced legal action since the government claims it to be a secret communication tool used by members of the Fethullah Gülen’s Hizmet movement, the alleged plotters and supporters of the coup.

The parliamentary committee on coup investigation released its report months after it was formed. Also having waited for the referendum to be over before releasing the report, the executive board of the committee – made up of AKP members – announced their findings simultaneously as the trials of the main case on the coup were also started at the end of May.

Yıldırım had also stated: “It has been admitted by some AKP members themselves that there are AKP members involved in the political arm of the coup.”
