Polls in Turkey closed at 4 pm in eastern provinces and at 5 pm elsewhere in the country. As counting continues, both main opposition party CHP (Republican People’s Party) and People’s Democratic Party (HDP) called on their ballot box observers and polling officers to ‘not leave site until the last minute’.
Several members of civil society groups and party members alike took responsibility as ballot box observers during the country's historic referendum, where the voters were asked to make their choice on whether to shift the country's governing system to a presidential one.
Due to a number of reports on possibility of fraud or irregularities, citizens were encouraged by political parties and civil society groups to monitor the process as closely as possible.
