Turkey’s Confederation of Progressive Workers' Unions joins the Justice March

On the 6th day of the Justice March in Turkey, which was launched by main opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu after a court decision ordered for the arrest of CHP MP Enis Berberoğlu in the case on MİT trucks, head of Turkey’s DİSK (Confederation of Progressive Workers’ Unions), Kani Beko, participated in the march at the border of Ankara-Bolu and gave a statement.

Beko said: “All of 80 million people living in the country expect justice. Justice is the bread of people and the future of the workers. There are currently about 7 million unemployed people and they expect their fair share. But only unemployed? No! Same goes for students and for the retirees, too.

Justice March is significant in saying ‘stop’ in the face of injustices. So, as DİSK, we’ve supported this move and will continue to do so.

This march should be spread all across the country... Injustices faced in our country are countless: workers, farmers, students, academics, journalists, intellectuals... Everyone is a victim of injustice.

For example, there are Saturday Mothers. They have been seeking justice for their children and relatives for decades.

Although press freedom is protected in the Constitution, there are currently 161 journalists jailed.

Including co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, there are currently 12 lawmakers in detention. So, the focus of this march must not solely be the Maltepe Prison, where CHP MP Enis Berberoğlu is held. It must spread all across the country.

The concerns about injustice is a concern of all 80 million. The people marching from Ankara to İstanbul should be greeted in İstanbul by millions.

Justice has shrunk as palaces have grown and this threatens the future of the country. And, by justice, we do not only refer to ‘equality before the law’. We rather demand social equality...

Hasn’t the current government silenced all radios, newspapers, and TVs that are against it? Haven’t nearly 5000 media professionals become unemployed? There are 85 trustees appointed in local offices. About 2000 laborers have been fired; and, on top of that, around 1500 laborors are in jail.

When the referendum was held in Turkey in April, great injustices were witnessed. The government used public funds (in referendum campaigns) while we used our own pocket money. The ballot boxes prevailed a ‘no’ vote but the Supreme Board of Elections seized the ‘no’ votes.

We have to continue our fight until a constitution that provides and protects equality, freedoms, democracy, secularism, and social rights becomess adapted in Turkey.

Enis Berberoğlu has been arrested in relation to the report on MİT trucks. Are there any journalists in Turkey and the world who have not reported on the MİT trucks case. Everyone reported on this. But the court has given a political decision. The real goal is to silence democracy forces that are fighting for justice...

I hope this march that we are holding will bring hope for those in jail and for everyone desiring justice in our country.”
