Turkey’s eastern province of Hakkari declared as ‘special security zone’

Turkey’s southeast province of Hakkari, which borders both Iran and Iraq, has been declared as a ‘special security zone.’

In a statement released by the governor’s office, the city center and 24 border towns in the districts of Çukurca, Şemdinli, and Yüksekova will be considered as special security zones for 15 days, starting on March 29th at midnight.

According to the statement, entering the designated towns without permission will now be allowed until April 12th.

The measure is defined as ‘an effort of the state to ensure safety of the citizens in the face of terror threats.’

As the operations in the region have intensified within the past years, Hakkari has once again become one of the provinces where clashes between Turkey’s security forces and the PKK have begun to be frequent.

Last week, Turkey’s state run Anadolu Agency reported on the latest attack in the province where a Turkish soldier was killed and three were wounded as a result of rocket attacks by PKK.
