Turkey’s esteemed news anchor İrfan Değirmenci, who has been hosting the morning news programme on Kanal D for several years, has been fired for having announced his position on the proposed new constitution from his personal twitter account.
His former employer firm Doğan Media Group released a statement, saying Değirmenci was fired because he ‘acted against the principles of impartiality by announcing on social media his views about a debated topic’.
Shortly after, director of the news programme Ertuğrul Albayrak announced his decision to quit his position by saying ‘though he was asked to stay, he was leaving because he is also against the new constitution.’
While a great flow of support and solidarity messages was extended to Değirmenci, the public and officials have been questioning whether other professionals in Doğan Media Group who have openly declared their ‘support for the proposed constitution’ would also be fired or not.
Answering questions of BirGün journalist Uğur Şahin, Değirmenci said they have been under pressure since 2013 and added: “We lost our jobs but we know that we are not going to be unemployed forever. Life goes on: one can live in dignity by selling simit or lemons, too. All three of us are this kind of people. Keeping silent is heavier; and, we have never defended remaining quiet.
When I saw what was happening in Ankara University, I wrote down 20 items (on social media)… And, in one of the last items, I wrote ‘no’ since I saw it proper. I thought I had the right and the chance to say that. But, apparently, those who say ‘no’ get punished. Of course, this cannot go on like this forever and everyone knows that… We are neither heroes nor traitors; we are just people who try to live with dignity… And, our victimization is actually nothing compared to other people’s victimization…”
In his twitter posts of February 10th, Değirmenci expressed his opposition mainly to oppression, injustice, inequality, and violence, as well as, interference of public officials with people's faith and lives and the plans for a one-man rule.
