Turkey's İHD files criminal complaint against group that attacked a synagogue in İstanbul

İstanbul branch of Turkey’s Human Rights Association (İHD) has filed a criminal complaint against ultra-nationalist-Islamist group Alperen Hearths over its members’ attack at Neve Shalom Synagogue of İstanbul’s Beyoğlu.

Earlier last week when the tension between Palestinians and Israel escalated due to the latest ban of Israel at Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem, members of the Alperen group of Turkey had gathered in front of Neve Shalom Synagogue to protest Israel.

However, their demonstration turned out violent as the head of the group, Kürşat Mican, gave threatening statements towards the Jewish community in İstanbul and other members physically attacked the synagogue.

Members of the İHD’s commission against racism and discrimination gave a press statement in front of Çağlayan Courthouse of İstanbul, where they submitted their criminal complaint against the Alperen Hearths’ members who took part in the violent attack at the synagogue.

İHD representative Işıl Su Demirel, who gave the statement on behalf of her association’s members, also reminded that a second similar attack took place with the same purpose at another synagogue in Balat neighborhood in İstanbul’s Fatih district.
