Turkey’s main opposition CHP takes the question on rigged referendum to Council of State

Turkey’s main opposition party CHP has taken the issue with regards to the unlawful decision of Supreme Election Council (YSK) to render unstamped ballot papers as valid to the Council of State (Danıştay).

Having submitted the request ‘for annulment of the decision of SEC’ on behalf of his party, CHP member Atilla Kurt gave the following statements afterwards: “We are trying to protect the rights of not only the ‘no’ voters but also of those who casted a ‘yes’ vote (in referendum on constitutional amendments)...”

Reminding that the last minute decision of SEC was taken and announced after the polls were closed and counting had started, Kurt said: “There is a complete unlawfulness in play here. I am not talking about violation of a statue or a regulation; I am talking about an overall unlawfulness… Our request (from Danıştay) is not against administrative operations or judiciary checks. We have requested for a suspension of execution (of referendum results) until an exact result is at hand. Today, I have also submitted a petition to SEC. SEC should not officially finalize the results before the decision of Danıştay is given.”
