Turkey’s ruling party withdraws controversial article of the bill on child sexual abuse

Justice Commission of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey held a meeting today under the leadership of AKP Ankara MP Ahmet İyimaya.

In the meeting where Justice Minsiter Bekir Bozdağ was also present, the controversial bill which had suggested for child molesters to be freed of punishment if they married the victim was discussed. The bill was initially scheduled to be voted on in the Parliament floor yesterday. However, as a result of major reactions, the government had to take back for further discussion at the parliamentary commission.

Announcing that the controversial article of the bill is now completely cancelled off, Bozdağ said: “Actually, the regulation we tried to bring about did not include not even a single rapist. But it was misunderstood. And, we could not explain it well, either. Due to the reaction among public, we withdraw this article.”
