Turkey's slain journalist Uğur Mumcu commemorated on 24th year of his killing

BirGün/Ankara

Turkey’s slain investigative journalist Uğur Mumcu was commemorated in front of his house in Ankara, where he was killed in a car bomb assassination on 24 January 1993.

Along with Mumcu’s family and friends, several people, including representatives and members of civil society groups, journalists, parliamentarians, and politicians attended the ceremony.

One of the most prominent journalists of his time in Turkey, Mumcu was especially keen in investigating radical Islam, corruption, as well as the Kurdish issue and the alleged ties of members of Turkey’s intelligence and PKK.

Mumcu was murdered in front of his house as his car loaded with explosives got detonated when he attempted to start it. Some groups, such as Islamic Liberation Organization, Raiders of Islamic Great Ease, and Islamic Jihad had claimed responsibility for the murder. And, former interior minister and police chief Mehmet Ağar, who served jail time in connection to Susurluk case, had said about the assassination of Uğur Mumcu: ‘If we take out just one brick, the whole wall would collapse’.

However, the case still remains unsolved after 24 years.

His blasted car has been displayed in Uğur Mumcu museum in Eskişehir since last year.

Commemoration ceremonies were also held by civil society groups in İstanbul and certain institutions are organizing seminars throughout the week on works of Mumcu, who was also a firm secularist following along principles of Turkey’s founding president Atatürk. Mumcu's esteemed works that he left behind are still among the most significant sources sheding light on matters that are still relevant in today's Turkey.
