Turkey summons US ambassador to Ankara over warrants of arrest issued against Erdoğan’s guards

On Thursday (June 15), Turkey’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called US ambassador to Ankara, John Bass, in response to the warrants of arrest issued by US authorities against 12 members of president Erdoğan’s security team who were involved in a brutal attack on protesters in DC earlier in May.

Ambassador Bass was summoned by Turkey’s officials for talks over this legal action against the guards. In a written statement released after the talks, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkey said it has been communicated with the ambassador of USA to Turkey that ‘citizens of Turkey cannot be held responsible for what happened since it would not have taken place if necessary security precautions had been taken by US authorities.’

The decision to issue a warrant of arrest against the president’s security detail is ‘unacceptable since it is obviously not a result of an impartial and independent investigation’, the ministry’s statement said.
