With the order of an emergency decree passed earlier in September, clocks in Turkey have been kept in summer time instead of being taken one hour back in October.
Though the government of Turkey asserted that this measure has been adapted in order to make use of daylight throughout winter months as much as possible, complaints about it across the country have grown as people ended up working in dark hours more and students had to begin and have their morning lessons hours before the sunrise.
Responding to reactions and a parliamentary question posed by CHP MP Barış Yarkadaş, Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources announced that ‘it is to continue this way.’
Having mentioned that this measure has been harmful for economic activities, as well as, for the psychology of many, Yarkadaş had asked in his parliamentary question: “… For us to start our day in winter one hour earlier does not mean that we’re saving ‘something.’ We are going to face many problems in the fields of finance, sports, tourism, transportation, and health, as a result of this practice…”
Also highlighting that there is now no time difference between Turkey and Saudi Arabia, Yarkadaş also asked: “Is it considered for this practice to be reviewed? How much of an energy saving has been made with this? Are the claims true that the actual purpose behind this practice is to ensure Turkey to be in the same time zone as Saudi Arabia in order to adjust the hours according to Mecca and Medina?
