VIDEO: A group holds a protest against celebration of Christmas in Turkey’s Nazilli

A group of young people from Alperen Ocakları (youth organization of far-right Islamist nationalist group) held a quite striking demonstration in front of the municipality building of Nazilli, Turkey.

Demonstrating against Christmas, the young men dressed in traditional folkloric costume of the Aegean region, performed a short street show where they chased, surroundered, and threatened Santa Claus with a gun.
They ended their demonstration with a Zeybek dance, a dance performed for symbolizing heroic nature of the people of the region.

While people around them watched the demonstration in shock, provincial head of the Alperen Ocakları Burak Yaşar said they did this demonstration with the purpose of reminding ‘people of their true belief and values’ and added: “We are the Muslim Turkish people who have been the bearers of Islam for thousands of years. We do not see the same consideration as shown in Christmas time from our business owners when it comes to our own national and religious holidays… We have organized this demonstration with the purpose of reminding our people of our own holidays and to show that we are against celebration of Christmas (here)”.

For the past few weeks in Turkey, several district offices of the national education ministry sent official statements to schools asking for decorations and activities related to new year’s celebrations to be avoided.
