Votes of academicians disregarded as President Erdoğan appoints new rector of Boğaziçi directly

Turkey's Presidency has appointed Prof. Dr. Mehmed Özkan as the new rector for Boğaziçi Univeristy, one of Turkey's most accredited universities. Though he was not a candidate in rector elections, it has been made possible for him to be appointed by the President's office in reference to a new decree passed under state of emergency.

Current rector Prof. Dr. Gülay Barbarosoğlu had been running the position since 2012 and received 86% of the votes in the most recent rector elections for the university.

While the votes of the academicians have been disregarded under the new decree passed by the Council of Ministers in state of emergency, the newly appointed rector Prof. Dr. Mehmed Özkan is claimed to be the brother of AKP MP for Eskişehir Emine Nur Günay.
