Wikipedia takes the first legal step against Turkey's ban

World’s most widely used free online encyclopedia Wikipedia took its first official step after access to its entire site was blocked in Turkey.

The Wikimedia Foundation has submitted an objection to the decision of Ankara’s 1st Penal Court of Peace.

According to the report of Ahmet Can from Hürriyet newspaper, the official objection letter was submitted by the Foundation’s lawyer in Turkey, Gönenç Gürkaynak.

In the letter of objection, it was stated that ‘the ban at stake was against freedom of expression’. Previous decisions regarding Google and YouTube were also reminded in the letter.

Blocking access to the site of Wikipedia entirely although the disputed content was published in two languages only (Turkish and English) was an unproportional measure, the Foundation’s letter of objection said.
