Access to Wikipedia blocked in Turkey

Access to the website of world’s widely known free online encyclopedia Wikipedia has been blocked since early hours of Saturday (April 29).

While reactions to it grew in social media, it was announced by Information and Communication Technologies Authority that an ‘administrative measure’ has been taken, as of today.

It has also been reported that officials of Turkey had been in contact with Wikipedia representatives in order for certain content on the website, which the Turkish authorities found as ‘terror propaganda’; ‘in support of terror acts’; or ‘portraying Turkey as a supporter of Turkey, to be removed or modified.

Having kept close contact with various international social media institutions lately, Turkey demands such institutions ‘to act in line with law and court decisions.’
