Evolution theory is 'too old and shot to pieces’, says Turkey’s Deputy PM Kurtulmuş

Speaking to Hakan Çelik on CNN Türk, Turkey’s Deputy PM and government spokesperson Numan Kurtulmuş gave statements about the most current issues of the day, such as the economic outlook in Turkey and foreign financial institutions’ evaluations on it and the upcoming referendum and speculations about a possibility of an early election.

Also commenting on his party’s controversial draft bill on redesigning the curriculum in the country, Kurtulmuş said the evolution theory is not included in their proposal because ‘it is an old theory that has been shot to pieces.’

Inefficiency of the education system in Turkey has been one of the major problems in the country for a while. Under the governments of the AKP, the problems in this field have grown and reached even more complex dimensions especially in regards to forced mandatory courses on religion at elementary and secondary levels. Excessive spread of İmam Hatip schools (vocational public schools with an Islamic curriculum) and lack of sufficient scientific base in the methods of the current system have been a topic of concern addressed by the opposition.
