HDP to hold weekly meetings in front of Constitutional Court of Turkey to demand justice

On Monday (April 24), executives of Turkey’s People’s Democratic Party (HDP) met in front of the Constitutional Court in Ankara to demand justice for the detained co-chairs and parliamentarians of their party.

Speaking on behalf of the HDP delegation, party’s spokesperson Osman Baydemir said: “Delayed justice is not justice! The court that got our parliamentarians arrested is now a political authority!”

As over 170 days have passed since co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, along with 9 parliamentarians, were jailed, HDP executives decided to meet in front of the Constitutional Court every Monday to demand the court to either give an explanation or to finalize the cases.

Since November of last year, a total of 15 parliamentarians from HDP – out of 59 MPs - were arrested; and, today, 12 MPs and two co-chairs are still imprisoned over accusations of ‘terror propaganda’.

Pressing that the imprisonments were unlawful, HDP delegation called on the head and the members of the Court ‘to either meet their legal obligations or resign if they feel under political pressure.’
