NATO to join coalition against ISIL in Syria and Iraq

AFP reported on Wednesday (May 24) that NATO will join the US coalition against the ISIL forces in Iraq and Syria.

Quoted by AFP, a diplomat who did not want his/her identity disclosed said: “The NATO (member state) ambassadors decided this evening an action plan on terrorism for the summit. It includes the accession of NATO to the global coalition against IS… This means that the AWACS will not just do airspace surveillance but airspace management… They are going to coordinate the flights and direct airplanes over Syria and Iraq but only for flights which are not related to bombings”

NATO’s move has come shortly after a statement by US Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, who said he was expecting the Alliance to join the collation despite disagreements of certain member states.

The decision will be officially endorsed by NATO on Thursday, according to report of AFP.
