PM of Turkey: ‘Presidential system means absolute authority of a single entity’

While Erdoğan and AKP officials have been trying to soften the debates over possible establishment of a presidential system in Turkey by using a different terminology when referring to the proposed system, Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım defined it as a system of ‘an absolute authority of a single entity’.

Having met with his party members in İstanbul’s Tuzla district, PM Yıldırım responded to criticism of main opposition party CHP’s leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu where he had named the efforts of AKP as ‘a change of regime.’ Yıldırım said: “Mr. Kılıçdaroğlu, the debates over the regime ended in 1923. Turkey chose ‘the Republic’! Nobody is changing the regime; please, understand this already! The only thing changing is the system of government.”

PM Yıldırım had previously made comments about the presidential system by saying ‘Turkey were to get partitioned if this new presidential system do not get approved.’ Resembling his earlier messages, Yıldırım said in Tuzla: “Government system is just like the municipality system… There is no use in magnifying the issue. For 80 years, municipality heads have been elected in Turkey. Has Turkey been partitioned? İstanbul has a municipality office and a city council. And, the municipality head is elected, on the same day with the members of the council. The same thing will be at place (with the presidential system). Both the Parliament memebrs and the President will be elected. They’re going to be elected on the same day and hold their duties for the same term. Then, elections will be held again on the same day. That’s all about it... Presidential system means absolute authority of a single entity. It means a strong political power. There is no coalitions under this presidential system...”
