Turkey’s Prime Ministry releases a warning about ‘legal consequences of hate speech’

Following the deadly armed attack of ISIL at famous Reina nightclub in İstanbul during the New Year’s Eve party at the very early hours of January 1st, several disturbing messages on social media, some of which including even expressions of content with the deadly attack, were observed. In light of reactions from public and opposition forces, both Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and government spokesperson Numan Kurtulmuş also drew attention to such posts on social media yesterday (January 2) and warned about the consequences of ‘hate speech.’

An official warning has been released by the Office of the Prime Ministry, which read as: “It should not be forgotten that criticism made based on values and lifestyles would serve for the benefit of terrorism. In these days in which we need national unity and cooperation, these kinds of expressions are dangerous traps that could make the terror acts seem righteous. Our citizens need to be sensible about these cheap traps… Such posts that also do not fit in with the interests of our country and nation can be considered as a crime, too. We announce to our pubic that legal action has been taken against those who share posts that could potentially trigger hatred and enmity among the public.”
