Women protesting against bill on child abuse in Turkey taken into custody

While major reactions continue against AKP government’s recent scandalous bill proposing for the suspension of sentencing for sexual molesters of children if they marry the victim, women who were protesting against it yesterday (November 18) in Turkey’s Kocaeli district were attacked and taken into custody by the police.

Having gathered in front of the city downtown in the evening hours on Friday with the call of the Kocaeli Women’s Platform, women were blocked by the police who claimed ‘all assembling and gatherings were banned under state of emergency’.

As women insisted on staying together in the area to read out their public statement, police intervened forcefully and took into custody 15 participating women.

Women continued making their statements and said ‘We are not going to accept any bill that legitimizes raping of women and children’ and ‘Rape is a crime: we are going to follow up and resist day and night until this bill is withdrawn.”
